Presented in a dark amber bottle Don Julio Añejo is actually relatively light in color compared to many tequilas in this category. It continues to be one of my favorites and I find it very smooth and enjoyable. Aged tequila is meant to be sipped and this is one of the best. Don Julio Añejo and Don Julio Silver which is also one of my favorite blancos has been widely available since the mid 90's. The original bottles of Don Julio were imported to the U.S. by Remy Amerique, Inc. and produced at the Tres Magueyes distillery in Atotonilco, Jalisco with the NOM 1118. The Don Julio line is now being imported in similar but new bottles by Seagram Americas and the distillery listed on the new labels is Don Julio S.A. de C.V. with the NOM 1449. A reputable source assures me that this is the same distillery in Atotonilco and still the same great tequila produced under the supervision of Don Julio González who founded the company in 1942.

Jose Cuervo says purchase of Don Julio approved
2003-05-14 21:20:39 GMT (Reuters)
MEXICO CITY, May 14 (Reuters) - Tequila maker Jose Cuervo said on Wednesday that Mexico's anti-trust watchdog had approved its purchase of 50 percent of Don Julio, producer of the famous tequila brand and now in the hands of the British Diageo Plc .
Jose Cuervo, the largest producer of the traditional Mexican spirit, will sell Don Julio tequila in Mexico, the company said in a news release, while Diageo, owner of Johnny Walker whiskey and Smirnoff vodka, distributes it elsewhere.
"This ... will allow Jose Cuervo to participate in the super premium drinks segment," the company said.
In 2002 Jose Cuervo produced 48.7 million liters of tequila, about 30 percent of Mexican production. Don Julio, with annual production of 2.5 million liters, is considered one of the most prestigious tequila brands.
The industry is recovering from a prolonged shortage of agave, the cactus plant from which tequila is produced.
