This product could go a long way in turning me into an añejo man. It was my first night in Guadalajara and along with four friends we were sitting in the upstairs bar at La Distilera, when I spotted a bottle of Don Julio 1942. I had been told about this new añejo before the trip and sort of had my eye out for it. After finding out that a snifter of 1942 would cost about $13.00 U.S. I decided to bite the bullet and had five of them brought to our table. To the nose it was quite sweet with definite notes of fruit and butterscotch. At the first sip I was taken aback by the thick body of this tequila. It seemed rich, sweet and unbelievably smooth and my initial thought was that the Tequilero had cheated somehow and that this was more like a liqueur. However this sensation was quickly followed by unquestionable agave flavor and a perfect compliment of pleasant but not overpowering oak flavors derived from its three years in the wood. I bought this round of 1942 to show my appreciation to my friends and their effort in getting us down here to Mexico. I thought this would be a nice gesture but it turned out to be even better than expected because each and every one of us seemed duly impressed with this tequila. As we sat at La Distillera with the sun beginning to set we looked down at what was left in the five shimmering snifters and noticed the tell tale "string of pearls" very prominent in each one further attesting to this tequilas body and quality. Maybe it was the atmosphere and the excitement of being in Guadalajara but everyone seemed to agree that this was one extremely wonderful tequila.

Update 08/2003 - Don Julio 1942 has made it to the U.S. and shortly after I was aware of this I saw a bottle for sale in Tucson, Arizona for $170.00. I had purchased my first bottle of 1942 in September of 2001 on the above mentioned trip to Guadalajara for about $135.00 USD. I just knew that if this tequila made it to the States that it would surely cost more but it appears that you can now purchase this tequila at a couple of the internet sellers for what seems like a bargain prices.
Mission has it for $109.99 and at the time of this update Hi-Time has 1942 on sale for $99.99. It is now packaged in a cardboard box instead of the cedar wood box as pictured above. I have been able to drink 1942 on a couple other occasions in Mexico and It was as good as remembered so at the moment I still consider this to be my favorite tequila añejo.
