NOTE: Tequila El Grito has not been produced or available, in any form for at least 6 years (as of 2008). I've done some work for a producer that knows the former El Grito owners personally. I was an El Grito fan myself but it's been gone a long time now. A lot of the pages on PocoTequila are in desperate need of updates but I also like to leave some old copy as a sort of record. I've left my original "El Grito Añejo" copy below but keep in mind it was probably written at least 6 years ago.
This aged tequila represents the top of the line for El Grito. I began seeing El Grito "Gold" as early as 1998 and this añejo soon followed. In the year 2000 all of the El Grito products began to disappear. I was able to contact the folks at Spirtisimo at that time and they explained that they had lost it's distributor in this region but this problem was worked out and the El Grito line began to show up again in early 2001. This renewed availability was short lived and Tequila El Grito is again nearly impossible to find anywhere. Further attempts to contact Spirtisimo were unsuccessful and I'm left with the assumption that Tequila El Grito is most likely no longer being produced.
Printed on the back of the El Grito Añejo bottles is (or was) the following text:
"It takes more time and effort to blend tequila from both copper and stainless steel pot stills but it yields a drink that is smoother and more distinctive. José Manuel, Luis and Miguel are the third generation of brothers to put their signature on production at the La Unión distillery and they are not about to mess with an ages-old process that begins with estate grown agave plants from the Los Altos region and ends with one year of careful resting in oak barrels. Enjoy the pleasant character that a little bit of extra work lends to this fine El Grito® tequila añejo".
