On a few other pages I mentioned meeting Luther Rochester on a organized tour of tequila factories in Jalisco in March 2006. On the last day of this tour the somewhat fatigued but very enthusiastic group of about 30 left the town of Tequila early in the morning for a long bus ride to Arandas in the highlands region. This is a pretty good trek from Tequila, heading East towards and through Guadalajara then another few hours into Los Altos. To the group however this was all worth the treat they had in store. I mention this with a fair amount of regret and envy because my wife and I decided to forego this leg and drive West back to Puerto Vallarta to spend a couple of days before heading back home. My wife was great about the whole trip and loves all of our experiences with Tequila and Mexico but the beach was calling and I felt she deserved it. We didn't go to Arandas but I heard from many who did that it was a great finale to a wonderful trip. They were greeted and given a personal tour of 'La Alteña', the Tapatio/ElTesoro distillery by none other than Carlos Camarena. As I was not there I'll just pass along the comments of Luther Rochester. In reference to the two exclusive tequilas the group had the privilege to sample Luther had the following to say:

"We drank two different things. The first was the barrel that he opened special for the group. That will be a 5-year aged El Tesoro product, but probably not available for some time (he only made 18 barrels, and doesn't think he'll sell this batch, so it will probably be at least 5 more years). He was very emotional about this one because he and his father (Don Felipe) made it together before his father died, and this was his first time trying it.

The other was the Tapatio Excelencia. This is a brand new super-aged product (I think he said 4 years?), and the bottles were just completed. He served it out of a cider jug, and he actually just filled this bottle so we could see what it would look like full. This tequila should be available (in Mexico at least) in the next 6 months."
