Hacienda del Cristero is named for a historical site with significant meaning to Mexico's "Cristero Revolution" which took place from 1926-1929. I think it may even be a reference to the Herradura Hacienda (San Jose del Refugio translates to the Refuge of San Jose) of that time. A lot more about this rebellion can be found in print and the web but briefly, the Cristero Revolution was an armed uprising of those loyal to the Catholic Church (cristero) against the Mexican government. Much of this rebellion took place in Jalisco and was primarily brought on by disputes over various articles laid out by authors of the 1917 constitution during the Mexican Revolution of 1910-1920. The Casa Herradura website states this tequila blanco was created as a tribute to Don Ambrosio Rosales who apparently was sympathetic to the Catholic Chuch and participated in the "Cristero Revolution".
If you'd like to read more about this interesting time in Mexican history as well as Tequila Herradura there is a great article written by long time tequila authority, John Bragg at the Baja Life Magazine web site. Mr. Bragg is well known in tequila circles as the proprietor of "Pancho's", a Cabo San Lucas cantina famous for it's huge selection of tequila and other agave based spirits. The article covers the Herradura history from it's inception up to the mid 1990's and discusses other interesting aspects of the property.
