Trying to find out just what "Calida Fornax" meant I came across numerous sites and articles discussing possible origins for the name of California. Among the possibilities some suggested that the word California may be derived from caliente fornalia, Spanish for hot furnace, or from calida fornax, Latin for hot climate. In fact one writer, Don Baumgart stated, "Or, perhaps the name came from the Latin "Calida fornax," or hot furnace, possibly exclaimed by Cortez and his men when they landed at the hot and inhospitable Baja peninsula."
Though it appears there's no firm agreement among scholars on the origin of the name California it's obvious that this last story or legend is what the creators of "Calida Fornax" Damiana Liqueur were inspired by. This brand is produced and somewhat crudely bottled in La Paz, Baja California Sur. It looks to be a re-used bottle of some kind and though an attempt was made to sand off the markings on the bottle cap the word Pacifico (cerveza) can be made out. The bottle did originally have a paper wrap covering the top and neck secured with twine and a hang tag (I' can't find it at the moment) which did make an attractive presentation. We bought this Damiana liqueur at the La Perla De La Paz department store in La Paz but the bottle was knocked over and cracked as soon as I got it home (explaining the liquid stains on this label). From what I was able to salvage it was a very tasty liqueur. I hope I come across it again.
