This tequila reposado is relatively new to us here in the U.S. as it was released in the year 2000 by Seagram Americas. Since the mid 90's Don Julio Blanco and Añejo was being imported by Remy Amerique, Inc. and available in most markets but for what ever reason a reposado version was strangely absent. Long before Seagram Americas began to import Don Julio along with this rested tequila I was aware of a top selling Don Julio Reposado available in Mexico. In fact Bob Emmons, author of "The Book Of Tequila" mentions bringing a bottle of Don Julio Reposado back to the U.S. in 1995. Bob Emmon's spoke highly in his assessment of this reposado and among other great comments my favorite was, "This tequila should be included among those that you should look for if you plan to sample and compare all of the tequilas of highest repute." A very popular tequila in Mexico, Don Julio Reposado has always been sold there in a dark amber glass bottle similar to the Añejo but square in shape. When Seagram acquired Don Julio and added the Reposado to the Don Julio line exported to the U.S. they decided to market it in a package consistent with the other products. However the same distinctive brown, square bottle (pictured in background) is how you will continue to find this tequila sold in Mexico.
2004/2005- Now that Cuervo owns Don Julio this round bottle of the reposado is no longer available anywhere. US imports are also in the brown, square bottle.
