This tequila began to show up in a few stores in Northern Colorado in the spring of 2002. Oddly enough from my perspective is the fact that Embajador Jalisciense ( Jalisco Ambassador ) is imported by a company out of near by Boulder, Colorado. The label of this regal looking product depicts the facade and towers of the Catedral de Guadalajara. Probably the most recognizable and certainly one of the more famous symbols of Guadalajara, Mexico's second largest city and the State Capitol of Jalisco.
(03/14/2003) I was fortunate enough to meet with Dan Benavidez, the Vice President of Operations at Boulder Imports. Mr. Benavidez took the time to talk with me about a number of issues, including this tequila but for the most part we discussed the importer's primary interest and main product of "Pulque". You can read more about this product at the Boulder Imports web site and at the PocoTequila "Pulque" page in the "Mexico Spirits" section but here I will try and report what is relative to Tequila Embajador Jalisciense. Unfortunately Mr. Benavidez confirmed that this tequila was no longer being produced and offered me the following statement.
"I will not go into what has occurred in the tequila industry over the past several years, as you as an expert are well aware of the crisis in Agave and what it has meant to the industry. So I know that you are aware that many fine Reposado and Anejos made by small distillers are no longer available. With that in mind Embajador is no longer made. We have a limited amount of the product, which we are keeping for our very special customers across the country and for our own pleasure. We are going to ?Vault? a limited supply for the future. In my estimation Embajador was one of the finest Reposados ever made. It is sad that it will no longer be available."
