While vacationing in Los Cabos in June of 2005 we found this tequila all over the region. Produced and named for the hotel in Todos Santos that was rumored to be the inspiration for the Eagles classic, smash hit song, Hotel California. The old hotel has had a long history under different names but apparently research has shown no truth to the rumors. Don Henly categorically denied ever having any ties or visits to this hotel. It seems the rumor was likely started as a publicity stunt in efforts to exploit the popular classic song and coincidental name of this old Baja hotel. True or not tourists still have to see the Hotel California when visiting Todos Santos. Recently renovated by new owners the hotel is truly worth a visit, regardless of any urban legends. We only got a quick glimpse during a brief lunch stop in town but the new property looked absolutely beautiful. The hotel has a gorgeous new restaurant at street level with lush tropical plants and fountains, as well as a Tequila bar. As we were only looking for a quick bite before heading north to La Paz for the night we opted for the "Tequila Sunrise Bar & Grill" across the street. Owned by Manuel Valdez who apparently once ran the Hotel California, this little cafe specialized in regional Mexican food and Manuel's famous, award winning cocktails and "real" Baja Margaritas. |
